A social conflict has been going on at Lidl all week. Today, just like the past two days, the doors of a hundred branches remained closed. On Wednesday, activists also blocked the distribution center of the department store chain in Genk. The unions are displeased with the high workload at Lidl. A new consultation is not scheduled until Monday and in anticipation of that, the unions had collectively called for a general strike on Saturday. “All doors must remain closed on October 16,” it sounds. “The management must understand that our demand for respect and personnel is not just a slogan.”

Whether that will actually be the case remains to be seen. “It is premature to say that all shops will remain closed on Saturday,” said a spokeswoman for the supermarket.
