The 13-year-old African lion Ekundu from the zoo in Honolulu, USA, died of coronavirus, the zoo announced on its Facebook page.
The lion and his partner Moxie showed signs of upper respiratory illness earlier in the month and immediately sent samples from the zoo for testing.
Ekundu has been suffering from epilepsy for 5 years. In recent days, he began to get sick and his appetite decreased, explained the zoo. Despite round-the-clock observation and treatment, Ekundu died a week after his initial signs.
Moxie’s condition is currently stable and is expected to recover.
It is not yet known how the lions became infected with the coronavirus. All employees who have been in contact with them have been vaccinated.
