A legend died who also defeated polio. Davis was an athletic champion and NBA winner

At the age of 89, the Olympic high jump winner from Helsinki and former world record holder Walter Davis died.

A native of Texas had a successful sports career, despite contracting polio at the age of eight. Already at university, he combined athletics with basketball, which he switched to after his Olympic triumph in 1952.

From 1952-1958 he played in the NBA for the Philadelphia Warriors and St. Louis Hawks and won two championship titles.

Over two meters tall, Davis won the 204 cm Olympic record in Helsinki. The following year, he set a world record of 212 cm, which lasted three years.
