Scientists at the Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) using sky images detected activity around C / 2014 UN271 (or the name of the discoverers – Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein). Initially, they thought it was an asteroid or even a dwarf planet.
It is certain, however, that we are talking about a comet rushing towards the sun. It is a thousand times larger than the average comet.
C / 2014 UN271 is still far from the Sun – approx. 19 AU, ie 19 times further than the Earth from the Sun.
Scientists have also calculated that the comet will be at the point closest to the Sun when it enters Saturn’s orbit. However, this will not happen until 2031.
