Just 15 minutes by subway from the city center and you are already surrounded by nature at the Icelandic Horse Riders in Düsseldorf. Here in the 4.2 hectares of land of the riding club, surrounded by green meadows, fields and horses. The Icelandic horses, 31 in number, are clearly doing well here. Curious, they come running, look, smell and munch.

The animals are kept in a so-called open barn, which means that they can move freely between the shelter and the meadow at all times. This is exactly the right thing for rugged Icelanders who love to walk and who, by the way, all have Icelandic names on this farm. Council member Claudia Schlage says: “Horses can live the way they want to live.”

The philosophy of the farm is characterized by family friendliness and the idea of self-sufficient stables. This means that membership fees are relatively low to make equestrian sport possible and affordable for families. The concept works because all members of the association work on the farm on a voluntary basis and manage it completely by themselves.
