“If a resident calls 311 to report that they accidentally dumped something, we check to see if the truck has dumped at the transfer station. If it has, it’s too late. But if it hasn’t, we isolate the truck and set up a hour for the resident to come to the station. Then we dump the truck in a wide area and the resident – who can carry one person – searches through the garbage, up to 10 tons! We schedule a few each month and, in about half of the cases, the resident manages to recover the lost object of value” DSNY.
