A bug in the latest version of Windows 10 slows down PCs – Geeko
For several months, updates to Windows 10 are as much feared as hoped for since each time, they seem to bring as many fixes as bugs. The latest is no exception, but luckily, a fix is already in development.
The problem caused by the Windows 10 version 2004 upgrade is with the “Defragment and optimize drives” tool, as spotted BleepingComputer. The bug prevents the operating system from recording the fact that it has already taken care of defragmenting and optimizing the machine’s SSD, so Windows will launch the defragmentation tool every time the computer is turned on .
However, unlike HDDs, SSDs do not need to be defragmented as often. This is why the bug caused by the news update Windows 10 version 2004 – to which we owe many other problems – could have a perverse effect and gradually reduce the health of the hard drive SSD by dint of being defragmented at each startup. If a user turns his machine off and on several times a day, it could run several defragmentations.
Microsoft is preparing a fix
Aware of the problem, Microsoft is already working on a fix. Members of the Windows Insiders program have already been able to take advantage of this. All that remains is to wait for it to be deployed for other users. In the meantime, it would be better to turn off automatic defragmentation.
To do this, go to your documents, “This PC” tab and right click on your SSD, in order to go to the settings. In the “Tools” tab, select “Optimize” in the “Optimize and defragment the drive” frame. On the new window, click on “Change settings” and turn off scheduled execution.
