Myths and rituals – this is the leading theme of this year’s Cēsis Art Festival, which opened on Saturday, July 10.


On this day, a large-scale contemporary art exhibition “Getting Closer to the Sun” has started at the Cēsis Contemporary Art Center. Myths and Rituals ”, which will feature seven new works by large-scale Latvian artists.

But at The sound and movement performance “Danse macabre” (“Death Dance”), the idea of ​​which was composed by composer Edgars Mākens and artist Krišs Salmanis, was shown on the 20th.

“When creating the program, we saw the modern day as very grateful to unravel and recreate myths and rituals. We do this both through the exhibition and the musical program, ”says the festival director Juris Žagars.

Puppet ballet, Death with an electric guitar, a musical saw, the mystery of sound and the burlesque of movement – all as in ancient times, when the Dance of Death was a mechanism for lowering steam in society.

This world of unusual sound and visual effects is included in Rūdolfs Gediņš’s sound and movement performance “Danse macabre” (“Dance of Death”). It will also be offered to a wider audience, allowing you to watch LMT in Straume and on smart television.

From the opening day of the festival, the exhibition “Getting Closer to the Sun” curated by Daiga Rudzāte will be opened at the Cēsis Contemporary Art Center until August 15.

Myths and Rituals ”, for which new works were created by well-known artists in Latvia – Aija Zariņa, Miķelis Fišers, Andris Eglītis, Ģirts Muižnieks, Krista and Reinis Dzudzilo, Katrīna Neiburga and Vika Eksta.

The exhibition, named after art historian and curator James Kahill’s book “Flying Too Close to the Sun”, explores the impact of myth and mythology on contemporary culture.

It is intended as a collection of works of art, creating a story about myths and phenomena that have attracted the attention of contemporary artists, inspiring them to dedicate themselves to their research.

The festival will be performed on August 14 with the performance of the third act of Richard Wagner’s opera “Valkyrie” directed by Viesturs Kairiss and with Andris Pogs at the conductor’s stand, featuring outstanding, internationally acclaimed Wagner’s soloists – the United Kingdom opera singer at the Weimar Theater, Liene Kinča, who twice received the Latvian Gas of the Year Award for Best Opera Soloist in 2011 and 2013, and Egils Siliņš, who played the role of Wotan in 2019 at the oldest Italian opera house, the Teatro di San Carlo ”.
