Apple’s foldable iPad could feature a carbon fiber kickstand. Although expensive, carbon fiber is more durable and will help control the weight of the device.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks the foldable iPad could launch in 2024 with an all-new design.

In a series of tweets, Ming-Chi Kuo says iPad shipments will decline 10-15% year-over-year in 2023. Indeed, Apple isn’t working on any iPad refreshes for this year. He believes the next iPad mini refresh will go into mass production in the first quarter of 2024.

Reports suggest Apple’s first foldable device will be an iPad, not an iPhone. An April 2022 report claimed the company had partnered with LG Display to create foldable iPads and MacBooks. However, it’s unclear if Apple plans to release a foldable iPad in 2024.

Adding a kickstand will help the device stand out from other foldables on the market. Presumably, this should allow users to prop up the foldable device at different angles. This can be useful when video calling or consuming content.

iPad mini refresh coming next year

Apple last performed a major redesign of the iPad mini in September 2021. This includes an updated design with thinner bezels, a larger 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, and faster internals. There are no leaks on what the iPad mini 7 might contain, but it should be an iterative upgrade focusing mostly on an internal refresh.

2024 could be a big year for the iPad lineup. Apple is rumored to be working on switching to OLED displays on its 2024 iPad Pro refresh. Currently, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro features a mini LED-backlit panel, while the smaller model uses a traditional 11-inch LCD screen. Combined with the launch of a foldable iPad and a mini refresh, iPad shipments are expected to be boosted next year.
