Nineteen people, including nine children, were killed on Sunday in a fire in a building located in the Bronx district of New York, according to the authorities.

“This is going to be one of the worst fires in our history. We know we have 19 people dead along with several others in critical condition and over 63 people injured,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on CNN.

During a press conference held earlier, Daniel Nigro, the chief of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), said that 32 victims had been transferred to five different hospitals and that a majority of them they were suffering from severe smoke poisoning.

“This is unprecedented in our city. We expect many deaths,” he added.

“Nearly 200 members of the New York City Fire Department are operating on the scene of the raging fire at 333 East 181 Street in the Bronx,” the fire department said on Twitter.
