If you own an Oculus headset or wish to purchase it soon, be aware that a Facebook account will be required to use it.
It was Oculus who announced the (bad?) News on Twitter, indicating that the transition will take place in October 2020, for all new users.

Today, we’re announcing some important updates to how people log into Oculus devices, while still keeping their VR profile. Starting in October 2020, everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account. // https://t.co/SMeDOXgehN

For anyone who already has an Oculus account, the transition will take place in two years. Indeed, on January 1, 2023, the Facebook account will be mandatory for all users. Oculus specifies that without the merger with a Facebook account, the helmet will remain usable, but the full functionality will not be accessible.
If the news is rather badly received on social networks, Oculus is reassuring :”you can always create or maintain a unique VR profile. And if you don’t want your Oculus friends to find you by your Facebook name, they won’t be able to. You can also choose what information about your VR activity you post to your Facebook profile, either by giving permission to post or by updating your settings.”
According to Facebook, this transition “will also introduce new social and multiplayer experiences in VR, like Facebook Horizon, where you can explore, play and create worlds.”
Oculus, bought by Facebook in 2014, is therefore continuing its integration into the social network. In 2019, the company headed by Mark Zuckerberg used data from headset users to better target certain advertisements.
