A cooperative planted trees to sequester 46 tons of CO2 per year

Specialists from the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences of the Universidad Nacional del Litoral and INTA Oliveros, plus the essential collaboration of advanced students from FCA-UNL, made possible the realization of the “San Agustn Forest Project”, an initiative of the Guillermo Lehmann Cooperative for which 4,600 plants of different hybrid materials of Eucalyptus were planted on the premises of the local branch of the institution.

After the implantation, carried out in mid-October on 4 hectares located to the south of the agro-industrial complex, the project continued with fertilization, irrigation, pest management, weeding and re-implantation works. This demanded a great dedication on the part of professionals, students and officials of the Cooperative, who will also have the task of continuing to accompany the growth of the grove during the coming years.

Trees are a living entity that provides multiple functions in rural areas, benefiting the environment and the community. For example, in one year, the 4,600 trees of the San Agustn Forest Project will absorb 46,000 kg. of CO2, and produce up to 598,000 kilograms of oxygen to help continue taking care of “everyone’s home.”

In turn, the project will be of great contribution as a demonstration for the region. Through three lines of tests on the different varieties implanted, it will be possible to evaluate and generate information of great value for the future installation of this type of systems in productive establishments throughout the area.

From the cooperative they remarked that for almost 70 years they have proposed “to be a regional leader in creating value businesses for associated agricultural producers, promoting economic, social and environmental sustainability within the framework of cooperative principles.”

In line with this Vision, and with the challenges that the institution is already acting on in the future (Community, Business Management, Technology and Environment), the “San Agustn Forest Project” was recently born.
