A child in Situbondo died of suspected dengue fever

A pediatric patient in Situbondo Regency, East Java, died after several days of medical treatment, allegedly due to dengue hemorrhagic fever or DHF.

Hari Santoso, Coordinator for the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (P2M) for the Situbondo District Health Office, Monday, said that until now health officials were still conducting epidemiological investigations to confirm the child’s death.

“We have to do clarification and epidemiological investigation whether the child died from dengue fever or other causes,” he said.

According to him, this child patient from Situbondo District had previously undergone medical treatment at a private hospital, and not long after was referred to a hospital in Jember and died.

Hari stated that of the 88 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever from January to February 17 2023, one toddler who was confirmed to have died from the dengue outbreak was recorded from Panarukan District.

“So far one toddler has died from dengue fever, while a child patient who died in a Jember hospital is still undergoing epidemiological investigations by our officers,” he said.

Officers from the Situbondo District Health Office are intensively fogging up residential areas to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito so as not to cause an outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), especially in endemic areas.

Fumigation was carried out by health workers in line with the outbreak of dengue fever, because from January to 17 February 2023 there had been 88 cases of dengue fever, one of whom (toddler) died and the other one is still under epidemiological investigation.

Of the 88 cases of dengue fever, 84 of them underwent medical treatment at dr. Abdoer Rahem (January to mid-February), one toddler patient aged three years died, 73 patients were declared cured and 10 other patients are still being treated at the regional government hospital.*
