A Brief History of Geography

What could be more spontaneous than wondering about your environment, about the mountain in front of you, the limits of the ocean at your feet, the composition of the earth and the sky? This is what the first geographers never stopped doing: exploring the limits and composition of their living area, seeking scientific as well as philosophical, religious and existential answers.

Jean-Jacques Bavoux, professor emeritus in the geography department of the University of Burgundy-Franche-Comté and member of the CNRS THéMA laboratory (Theorizing and Modeling for Planning) wondered about these first geographers and searched maps and ancient texts for all the clues of their way of seeing the world… And it is this sum of theories, observations and beliefs that he restores to us in his work A brief history of geography: representations of the world from Ulysses to Christopher Columbus which is published by Armand Colin.
