A blackout throughout the island of Tenerife leaves more than a million people without light | Radio Club Tenerife

After the massive blackout that has left the entire island of Tenerife at 13:15 (14:15 on the peninsula), supply has been gradually recovering. The causes are still being investigated, but the first information points to a problem in the Granadilla substation.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, Patricia Hernández, has written on her official Twitter account that Endesa is trying to restore the light and they have reported that the electric current will return in six hours.

In statements to Cadena SER, the mayor of Santa Cruz explained that Endesa “has not detected any problem in its facilities”, despite the fact that the cut may come from a supply failure. However, Hernández has confirmed that the light begins to reset in some “very small” areas such as La Laguna and La Orotava where the energy has already returned.

The outage has also affected hospitals that continue to operate thanks to generators, in addition to communication failures and coverage on mobile phones. In principle, traffic lights do not work and traffic has to be regulated by the local police in the different municipalities. Various retentions have been recorded, but little by little, normality is recovering. The tram service works again with slight delays.

According to the Cabildo de Tenerife, they are in permanent contact with Endesa. In principle there have been no incidents on roads, the emergency generators have been activated normally and an operation has been launched. For the moment, Tenerife firefighters have intervened in more than 30 incidents in elevators in the metropolitan area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

“We are waiting for the light to return”

Rafael is a citizen of the island of Tenerife who has called Carousel Deportivo de la Cadena SER to explain how he is experiencing the blackout in his area since he is caring for a family member with a severe disability of 84%. It is his mother who “cannot use her sections”.

“My mother is here, next to me, in an articulated chair that we cannot use”, explained Rafael, who is waiting for the electrical system to return to “return to normal” with the care and life of his mother. “Nor we have proof neither of the reasons nor of the time to wait “.

Last blackout in 2010

Tenerife has already experienced a general blackout in 2010. A failure in the Las Caletillas substation dragged the entire electrical system in Tenerife during 5-6 hours. An event that occurred the second time in just ten days and affected almost a million people.
