Snow removal works in Samcheon-dong, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, where a lot of snow fell on the 4th of last month. The snow that falls on a day is more clumpy and heavier than the snow last month, and the damage to the facilities can be great, so care should be taken. yunhap news

On the first day of March, rain pours across the country, and a lot of snow falls in the mountainous regions. This snow is’heavy snow’ with moisture, and especially in Gangwon-do, where it snows a lot, it is necessary to prepare for damage to facilities such as roof collapse.

According to the Meteorological Administration on the 1st, a strong rain cloud rains all over the country as it enters the sphere of influence of the low pressure approaching Korea from the vicinity of Shandong Peninsula, China. 1~3cm of snow per hour began to accumulate in the central and northern mountainous areas of Gangwon, where the temperature is low, and snow is falling on the northern east coast of Gangwon-do.

It is predicted that the east wind continues to blow and the temperature decreases from the afternoon, and the snow will increase further. Heavy snow warnings have been issued in the mountainous areas of Gangwon-do and Goseong, Sokcho, and Yangyang, and the heavy snow warning is expected to gradually expand to all of Gangwon-do, Gyeongbuk and Gyeonggi-do.

Until the afternoon of the 2nd, in Gangwon-Yeong-dong area, 10~40cm, in many places, more than 50cm may be accumulated. Gangwon Yeongseo and North Gyeongsang Province are expected to snow 5 to 15 cm, and in eastern and northern Gyeonggi and 3 to 8 cm in northern Gyeongbuk. 1~5cm of snow falls on northern Chungbuk and on Ulleungdo and Dokdo.

The Meteorological Agency was concerned that this snow could be particularly damaging to facilities because it is’heavy snow (wet)’. Compared to snow (construction), where each snow crystal freezes and does not clump well, snow with moisture clumps easily and is heavy. In winter, on the west coast of Jeollanam-do, snow with such moisture falls, causing damage to facilities such as greenhouses collapse. In Gangwon-do on the 1st, the temperature is lower than in Jeonnam, making it even colder and heavy snow.

Forecast analyst Woo Jin-gyu of the Meteorological Administration explained, “Currently, in Gangwon-do, cold and humid air from the east is laid on the bottom, and warm and humid air from the south is placed on top of it, and it snows as it cools.” He added, “The humidity in the air that snow is formed and falls is so high that moisture permeates between the snow crystals, attaching the crystals and falling into heavy snow.”

Normally, when construction falls in Gangwon-do, 1mm of precipitation is equivalent to 2~4cm of snowfall, but this snow is likely to fall with 1mm of precipitation less than 1cm.

Analyst Woo said, “Snow that was compressed three times more than the snow that had been frozen in the middle of winter.” “The snow falling along with the cold wave of the winter is’construction’. He called for caution, saying, “The weight that can cause the roof to collapse if it is accumulated in centimeters”. In 2011, heavy snowfall in Gangwon-do suffered a lot of damage, such as the collapse of the roof of the traditional market due to heavy snowfall.
