Nearly 800,000 people have downloaded CoronaMelder | NOW

The CoronaMelder app has been installed by nearly 800,000 people since Sunday evening, the Ministry of Health said.

The app works via bluetooth and should warn people if they have been in the vicinity of an infected person.

At the moment, CoronaMelder cannot be used everywhere. The app is available since Monday tested by the GGDs in Drenthe, Overijssel and part of Gelderland. Only there can people who are infected together with the GGD warn other app users.

The app should start working nationwide on 1 September. However, the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) was still critical of the safeguards for privacy. That is why Minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) has drawn up a temporary law for the CoronaMelder.

The House of Representatives will have a summer recess until September 1, but MPs have interrupted their holiday in recent weeks to debate, among other things, the corona crisis.
