A Twitter user last week posted an image of a “human-sized” bat found in the Philippines, which has quickly gone viral and even scared some netizens.
“Remember when I told you that there are human-sized bats in the Philippines? Yes, this is what I was talking about,” the tweeter wrote, sharing the screenshot of a publication. The netizen suggests that the animal in the photo is a giant golden crown flying fox, ora species of bat whose wingspan with wings spread can reach up to 1.7 meters.
The image, which was initially published on Reddit a year ago, has immediately gone viral and already has more than 263,000 likes, more than 105,000 retweets, and thousands of comments.
“This bat is taller than me and I’m just as horrified and impressed“A netizen indicated.” Holy hell !, I would be terrified if I saw one of those, “confessed another.
Some users even shared details about the physical characteristics and diet of these flying mammals.
“Hello, I am from the Philippines. I can confirm, they have a huge wingspan but their body really is not as big, but more or less like that of a medium-sized dog (or a little smaller). And yes, they only eat fruit, especially guavas. They are also very tame, “wrote one tweeter.
However, it is unclear if the animal in the picture is really a giant golden crown flying fox, as some users indicated that it does not have the typical reddish hair of flying foxes on its head.
The Philippine flying fox is threatened and is currently listed as endangered due to its intensive hunting for meat and poaching. They are endemic to the Philippines, where they live in the rain forests.
