Real Madrid took over the lead in La Liga from FC Barcelona on Sunday. The team of trainer Zinedine Zidane won 0-1 against finalist Espanyol and took full advantage of the loss of points that the competitor suffered on Saturday against Celta de Vigo (2-2).
The difference between the two title rivals is now two points in favor of Real Madrid. Moreover, the mutual result is in favor of the Madrilenians.
The starring role in the mediocre game was for Karim Benzema. The Frenchman was at the foundation of the winning goal of Casemiro. With a beautiful heelball, he enabled his Brazilian teammate to score close-up.
The goal was justified given Real Madrid’s predominance, but the team was unable to continue after the break. With two dangerous free kicks, Espanyol was even close to the surprising equalizer.

Cillessen beaten by handsome Volley Villarreal
Jasper Cilllessen and Valencia suffered a painful defeat in the battle for European football in La Liga for the second time in four days. Villarreal won 2-0 at home by two nice goals.
Paco Alcácer opened the score in the empty Estadio de la Cerámica in the fourteenth minute by completing a nice touch by Gerard. Cillessen had no chance of betting in the far corner.
Just before half-time, the Dutch keeper was passed for the second time and Gerard’s goal was even better than the 1-0. The Spanish attacker of Villarreal took a pass from Santi Cazorla on his left shoe in one go and his volley of just under 16 meters hit rock hard.
Valencia has not really been in shape since the restart of La Liga. The team of trainer Albert Celades lost 1-0 on Thursday to low-flyer Eibar and only took four points in five games in June.
The six-time national champion is eighth, a place that is not good enough for European football at the end of the season. Villarreal is number five with five points more than Valencia.
