The Association of Mediators of the UEMOA space adopts its strategic plan in Lomé – Togo-Presse

Lomé hosted from March 27 to 29, 2023, the extraordinary general assembly of the Association of Mediators of the Member States of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (AMP-UEMOA). The meeting which took place around the theme ” State of play of the security situation in the WAEMU space: what approaches for mediators », allowed the mediators to validate their strategic plan for the period 2023-2027. At the end of the work, several recommendations were made by the general assembly aimed at strengthening the technical and financial support of the AMP-UEMOA for better support to States in the prevention and fight against terrorism and extremism. violent. The assembly also adopted a so-called Lomé declaration in which it undertakes that space mediation institutions intensify the awareness of governments and populations to fight against these various threats to peace and development.

Started on Monday, the extraordinary general meeting of the Association of Mediators of the Member States of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (AMP-UEMOA) ended last Wednesday on a note of general satisfaction. The meeting was mainly devoted to the review and adoption of the 2023-2017 strategic plan of AMP-UEMOA. This plan should make the space mediation institutions more visible, while promoting their involvement in the projects of integration, consolidation of the rule of law and security in the sub-region. At the end of the work, the mediators made several recommendations. Thus, with regard to WAEMU, they recommend encouraging the sharing of experiences and good practices between the administrations of the Member States of the Union in terms of good citizenship and civic education, to support development projects in areas with high security challenges. To the Member States, the mediators recommend, among other things, harmonizing national pastoral codes and setting up policies for the sedentarization of herders and, if not, instituting national and regional transhumance certificates, associating the researchers in preventing and countering terrorism and violent extremism, to promote alternative dispute resolution. To the mediation institutions, the conference asked to strengthen the sharing of experiences between space mediators, in particular on security challenges, etc.

The mediators also adopted a “ Lome Declaration » where, concerned about the security situation and the impact on the populations and the development of the States, are committed so that their institutions intensify the sensitization of the governments and the populations against the threats and the terrorist attacks as well as violent extremism. They welcomed the efforts made at the bilateral and multilateral levels to eradicate terrorism and related offenses in the WAEMU area, in order to preserve its vocation as a space for exchanges, peace, stability and fruitful cooperation, etc

On this occasion, the president of AMP-UEMOA, Ms. Awa Nana Daboya, thanked the Togolese authorities for all the facilities granted to the association in organizing this important meeting. She commended the efforts of all the participants who, each at their own level, contributed to the success of this meeting which led to the adoption of this strategic plan. This plan responds to the common vision and will strengthen the integration of space through support for the actions of the WAEMU Commission. At the closing ceremony, the participants addressed motions of thanks to the Head of State, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, to the President of the UEMOA Commission and to the President of AMP-UEMOA.
