The head of the European Council has called on the UN Security Council to deprive Russia of the right of veto

Head of the Council of Europe Charles Michel

Charles Michel, like the leaders of the European countries, insists on the reform of the United Nations.

If a permanent member of the UN Security Council starts a war against another state, he should automatically be excluded from the Security Council. This was stated by the head of the Council of Europe, Charles Michel, during speeches from the grandstand of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday 23 September.

“When a permanent member of the UN Security Council starts an unprovoked and unjustified war, a war condemned by the UN General Assembly, his exclusion from the Security Council should be automatic,” he said.

According to the politician, the use of the right of veto should be an exception, but it has now become the rule, “and this must be urgently changed”.

We recall that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – China, the United States, France, Great Britain and Russia – have the right of veto on resolutions binding on member states. This privilege is actively used by Moscow in matters of war in Ukraine.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: The United States wants to reform the UN Security Council and plan to make every effort to do so.

Also calls for UN reform French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
