The Telegraph reports that the Duke of Sussex received a phone call from his father, King Charles III, shortly before landing in Aberdeen, Scotland, just 50 miles from Balmoral Castle. Upon the landing of Harry’s plane, the announcement was made on Buckingham Palace’s official website and social media.

A spokesman for King Charles III told the media that “the public was informed after all family members were informed”.

A royal spokesperson points out that Harry was treated no differently from other relatives and that Charles “had no regular contact” with anyone while his mother’s health was rapidly deteriorating.

Family members were reportedly informed of the Queen’s deteriorating health the night before, but it was not considered serious enough for everyone to rush to Balmoral, the report said.

The next morning, however, the situation changed and a plan was hastily worked out for Charles to go to Balmoral. Later that morning, he called both Prince William and Harry with the news that their grandmother’s health was rapidly deteriorating and that they had to go to Scotland as soon as possible. Harry is said to have received a call “some time” after he was his brother, prompting him to seek transport from Germany, where he was participating in the Invictus Games.

Meanwhile, William joined his uncles, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, when they landed in Aberdeen at 3:30 pm. Harry’s plane left Germany at 5:35 pm. The announcement of the Queen’s death was given at 6:30 pm local time (8:30 pm in Latvia), but Harry’s plane landed 16 minutes later.
