The Freiburg University Hospital has so far admitted 200 corona patients as inpatients. There is now a study of the first 115. It shows that approximately every fourth Covid 19 intensive care patient has died.
78 percent of the seriously ill Covid-19 patients who had to be treated in the intensive care unit of Freiburg University Hospital were men. About one in four intensive care patients infected with the coronavirus has died. These figures come from a new study. The infectious disease department at the university clinic evaluated the results of the treatment of the first 115 of the 200 corona patients admitted to the hospital so far with severe cases. The study, led by the infectiologist Winfried Kern and with senior physician Siegbert Rieg as the first author, has now been published in the specialist publication Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift.
The 115 patients considered for the study were on average 64 years old. The age range ranged from a two week old baby to a 96 year old sufferer. 37 percent of those affected had previous heart diseases. One in four had been infected in a hospital or nursing home. 78 patients could be treated in the normal ward, 37 had to go to the intensive care unit because of Covid-19.
17 of the 115 patients had died by the end of the study period
32 patients were ventilated invasively and non-invasively. Eight infected people needed ECMO therapy, in which a machine temporarily took over the function of the lungs. 17 of the 115 patients had died by the end of the study period. This number could increase because the treatment had not yet been completed for all patients at the time, according to the university clinic. Eight of the deceased had previously been treated in the normal ward. Nine out of 37 patients died in the intensive care unit. That corresponds to a share of 24 percent.
The study also looked at how the university hospital had prepared for the pandemic with a task force. The Freiburg large hospital was one of the first institutions in Germany to carry out Sars-CoV-2 tests. Due to the proximity to France and Switzerland, the university clinic was faced with a larger number of Covid 19 patients in a nationwide comparison.
