Several Amsterdammers with a parking permit have received an email from the municipality in recent weeks with the question whether they want to participate in the ‘car sharing experiment with residents’ permits’. This means that they can dispose of their car and then continue to park with a car borrowed from a friend.

Two Amsterdam motorists must participate in the experiment. If one of the two cars (temporarily) no longer uses the car, the other car may be parked in both permit areas. You have to pay for a permit area, but that is the area with the highest rate.

“It is still sustainable and good for air quality too”

In the e-mail, the municipality states that the car owners will benefit financially. “A car is parked for 23 hours a day on average and quickly costs around 250 to 450 euros per month. And that does not include fuel costs. If we share cars, they are used better, fewer are needed and you save up to hundreds of euros per month. And it is still sustainable and good for air quality too.”
The municipality also points out that the city is growing. That would also apply to the number of cars on the street. “We are taking various measures to reduce car use and thus make room on the street for quality of life, greenery, games, cyclists and pedestrians.”

Not everyone is thrilled. One of the recipients of the email informs AT5 that in her view it makes no sense. “To share your car in another area at the highest rate. The experiment will run until December 31, 2023 and up to 100 couples can participate. Participants can stop at any time and receive a resident permit for their own permit area again.
