Fifth in the last ranking by Deloitte of the richest clubs in the world on last season’s results, PSG also ranks second European champion the richest in the world, according to the study by KPMG. Flourishing results for the capital’s club, but not illogical according to Nasser Al-Khelaïfi. The Parisian president entrusts RMC Sport with the PSG strategy for the years to come, with optimism.
Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, how do you explain the spectacular growth of PSG?
This exceptional growth is the result of hard work and collective determination. As soon as we bought the club, we implemented a strategy to significantly increase all sources of income. We knew how to make Paris Saint-Germain an extremely attractive global brand, avant-garde and attentive to its fans. This is what allowed us to sign the most important sponsorship contracts in the history of the club with Nike and Accor and a total of 14 new partners in 2019.
Can PSG become the club that generates the most income in the world?
Our goal is to maintain sustained growth. We have to be innovative. We are very attentive to trends to understand the needs of consumers and the technologies that meet them.
How do you see the future for Paris?
We look to the future with serenity and determination. We see every day the great attractiveness of our brand all over the world. We have opened offices in New York, Singapore, Shanghai, Tokyo and Doha which play an important role in the growth and development of the Club. Over 13,000 children play with the PSG jersey through our network of PSG Academy. And more than 80 million fans follow us on social networks.
Is this a sign that all the troubles with financial fair play are definitely behind you?
We have always approached financial fair play with great confidence and total transparency in our exchanges with our interlocutors. Our exceptional growth continues. It demonstrates the quality of the work accomplished by the club and echoes the forecasts that we had presented to the authorities.
What will change for TV rights next summer? Are you going to be stronger?
I am delighted with this increase in TV rights which will do a lot of good for French football. For our part, this increase will allow us to make up for part of our delay in this source of income vis-à-vis our main rivals in Europe.
Do these results make you think that it is useful to consider a closed super league to sustain or even increase these revenues?
PSG has already perpetuated a large part of its revenue and we don’t need a closed league to continue our work. We still have many possibilities to increase them and strengthen the club’s influence in the world. But I repeat, today these results make me especially proud of the work done by everyone at the club.
