North Korea confirms first case of Covid-19 and declares emergency / Article

North Korea has so far not recognized any cases of Covid-19 on its territory. Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, the North Korean government has implemented a strong blockade of Covid-19 on its borders.

Pyongyang samples from patients with fever “match” the highly contagious variant of Covid-19 omicron, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

North Korean leader Kim Chenun and other senior officials held a political office crisis meeting to discuss the Covid-19 outbreak and announced that they would put in place a “maximum emergency” virus control system.

Kim said at the meeting that “the goal is to eliminate the virus in the shortest possible time.”

“He assured us that due to the high political awareness of the people (..) we will definitely overcome the emergency,” the KCNA reported.

Kim called for tighter border controls and arcade measures, urging citizens to “completely block the spread of the virus by thoroughly blocking their areas in all cities and areas.”

All business and production will be organized so that each work unit is “isolated”, preventing the spread of the disease, the KCNA added.

Experts say none of the 25 million people in North Korea have been vaccinated against Covid-19 because the country rejected vaccination offers from the World Health Organization, China and Russia. It would be difficult for North Korea’s incomplete health care system to cope with a major outbreak of Covid-19.
