Schenk had been suffering from heart problems for years. In the summer of 2017, the former village school teacher had to undergo a first operation. Nevertheless, he never lost the optimism that everything will be fine again. However, a second heart operation was now necessary, during which he suffered a stroke. Last night Simus’ heart stopped beating.

Schenk has shaped Swiss ice hockey like no other. As a player, he led SC Langnau to the only Swiss championship title in club history in 1976. In 1985 the man from Trubschachen took over as the coach of the Swiss national team, with which he celebrated his promotion to the A group, which at the time had only eight teams, at the B World Cup in Eindhoven a year later.

In 1990 he became chief coach at the then NLA league team Olten, before he coached Nati in 1995 for two more years. From 1998 to 2017, Schenk, who was elected to the National Council for SVP in 1994, worked as head of sports and at times also as a managing director in the organization of the ZSC and the GCK-Lions.

Most recently, the father of three children worked as an expert at the “My Sports” pay station.
