Belgium expels imam who once called for the burning of Jews

Brussels

An original priest Morocco who called for the ‘burning of the Jewish people’ in a 2009 video, has been expelled from Belgium. The priest has been banned from Belgium since last October because it was designated a national security threat.

As reported AFP, Friday (14/1/2022), the news of the expulsion of the local mosque imam named Mohamed Toujgani was first reported by Belgian television, GARDEN and was officially confirmed by the Belgian Foreign Minister for Asylum and Migration, Sammy Mahdi.

“This man is probably the most influential preacher in Belgium,” Mahdi said at a meeting in the Belgian parliament.

Toujgani was the imam of the Al-Khalil Mosque in Molenbeek until last year. The mosque is one of the largest places of worship for Muslims in Belgium.

The Belgian authorities said in a statement that Toujgani’s residence permit had been revoked since October 12.

“He (Toujgani-ed) was quite controversial for some time. In 2009, he again called for the burning of Jews,” the statement said.

Toujgani’s old videos resurfaced in 2019 and he has apologized for his remarks. local media GARDEN said Toujgani cited ‘errors’ in what he called the ‘war’ that Israel is waging against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
