2307 children were born this year in the gynecological clinic of Bern’s Inselspital. That is the highest value in almost half a century, as the island group announced on Friday. Compared to the previous year, the number of births rose by 15 percent.
The record from last year, when 2031 children were born in the women’s clinic, was reached in October this year. The sharp rise in the number of births at the women’s clinic has been a trend that has persisted for years, which was accentuated at the beginning of 2021, while the number of births across Switzerland has stagnated in recent years.
“This year it was a veritable baby boom that we were able to experience,” said Doctor Daniel Surbek, chief obstetrician and co-clinic director, quoted in a press release.
In addition to the many births, the corona pandemic presented the women’s clinic with additional major challenges. Almost 100 pregnant women who were sick with Covid-19 were treated at the women’s clinic in 2021.
From January to the end of August, 265 children were born in the Münsingen Hospital. The Insel Gruppe has been concentrating obstetrics at the women’s clinic at Inselspital since the end of August.
The Hirslanden Group also reported a new record: over 1,250 babies saw the light of day in the Salem Hospital this year. Twins or multiple births were found in 22 births.
