KSRTC hires Private Buses for 23 Inter-State Routes

Thiruvananthapuram ∙ Private super class buses will be hired to continue running KSRTC services from various depots in the state to inter-state routes. In the first phase, bids will be invited for 23 routes. Super class luxury buses less than four years old are invited. Buses should be operated at the ticket price fixed by KSRTC. the

Private buses registered in other states have to pay a tax of Rs 2500 per seat for operating services to Kerala. No EO tax if hired by KSRTC. Dividends from the service should be paid to KSRTC.

KSRTC is short of 300 buses to run inter-state services. At least 100 buses are planned to be hired in the first phase. It has been eight years since Super Class buses were purchased for long distance services. Even the profitable Bengaluru, Mookambika, Mysuru, Coimbatore, Sullya and Salem services are being disrupted. There is no money to buy a bus to solve this crisis. Old buses cannot keep up with other private services.

Services are down

Inter-state services are not the only ones that are regularly disrupted due to shortage and age of buses. Thiruvananthapuram – Kozhikode low floor services and most of the long distance services within Kerala have been stopped in the last few days. Low-floor AC regular services, which were profitable by making reservations, are also being canceled without warning. KSRTC does not have money even to buy spare parts for buses.
