City Hall approved the millionaire payment for a cyclist who was paralyzed after an accident seven years ago, when a car driven by a drunk driver collided with him on a blind lap, one of the largest lawsuits the city of San Diego has ever received.
For its part, driver Theresa Lynn Owens was sentenced to 19 years in prison for driving under the influence of methamphetamine. However, cyclist Vinolo had filed a lawsuit in 2016 against the city of San Diego, claiming he was also at fault for his accident.
On the demand, Juan Carlos Vinolo alleged that the blind corners on the highway were one-way, so they became more dangerous due to the obstruction of bushes and high berms, causing several accidents and traffic problems in the area.
However, officials never addressed these issues. So in 2019, a civil jury assigned 27 percent of the responsibility for the accident to the city of San Diego, and 73 percent of the fault to driver Theresa Owens.
As part of the 2014 accident, Juan Carlos Vinolo suffered a cut in the spine that left him paralyzed from the chest down. This Tuesday, the payment of the agreement that was approved in September, by the City of San Diego, California is scheduled.
