The holidays begin in North Rhine-Westphalia – and this will probably lead to traffic jams on the autobahns. It could get particularly full on the routes between Dortmund and Bremen, Dortmund and Hanover and Oberhausen and Cologne, according to the ADAC.
At the start of the autumn holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia, the ADAC expects a lot of traffic jams, especially on the busy motorways around Cologne. “Vacationers, day trippers and on Friday also commuters, in combination with many construction sites and permanent closures due to flood damage, create a high risk of congestion in North Rhine-Westphalia,” said traffic expert Roman Suthold. The A1 (Dortmund – Osnabrück – Bremen), A2 (Dortmund – Hanover) and the A3 (Oberhausen – Cologne) could be particularly affected.
Because of the flood damage on the A1 between the Erfttal motorway triangle and the Hürth junction and on the A61 in the direction of Venlo, travelers would have to be prepared for longer waiting times on the alternative routes. In the Ruhr area, a closure on the A40 between Mülheim-Heißen and Duisburg-Kaiserberg could cause problems: According to Autobahn GmbH, the asphalt will be renewed on the route from Friday (October 8th) to Monday (October 18th).
When it’s better not to drive
If you want to get to your destination as free from traffic jams as possible, you shouldn’t set off on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning or late Sunday afternoon: Then the ADAC Nordrhein expects the highest traffic volume, especially on the busy routes towards the coast, the Alps or low mountain ranges.
With NRW, Berlin, Brandenburg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate start their autumn holidays. The official start is October 11th (Monday), but many travelers go on vacation this weekend. Across Germany, according to the ADAC, around 1000 construction sites on the motorways are causing possible delays.
