Trent World Class Defender, Why Played As a Midfielder?

Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold tried to play as a midfielder in England National Team. This strange decision was questioned by the manager Liverpool Jürgen Klopp.

Trent was called into the Three Lions squad for the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers. The 23-year-old defender was played as a starter when England faced Andorra last week.

England did win 4-0, but Trent’s performance was then highlighted. Playing as a central midfielder with Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham, Trent looks clumsy.

Even his performance in the first half was not good enough that England only scored one goal. Well, in the second half, coach Gareth Southgate made a change, Trent was returned to his original position as right-back.

As a result, Trent is more clear and England can be sharper by scoring three goals in the second half. Southgate’s experiment also failed.

Though the discourse of Trent trying to become a central midfielder has long been echoed by some pundits in England. However, this is actually doubted by Klopp as Trent’s manager at the club.

According to Klopp, Trent Alexander-Arnold has become a world-class player in his current position and does not need to be tampered with anymore.

“About Trent, if you look at our game then you know that Trent’s position has changed. It wasn’t during the game, but there were several times his position changed in the match that made it possible for that,” Klopp was quoted as saying. The Athletic.

“So there’s no need to turn him into a midfielder. I regret it a little when we are still talking like football in 2021,” he continued.

“Players can play anywhere, especially good players can be placed anywhere.”

“For example when England dominate, or when we control the game, Trent can play in the middle. I still prefer him to play at number six rather than eight.”

“Anything is possible, but why play the world’s best right-back as a midfielder? I really don’t understand,” he concluded Jürgen Klopp.
