Indonesian Ambassador Clarifies to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Diplomats Shouting ‘I Can’t Breathe’

Jakarta

The Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Usra Hendra Harahap, gave clarification to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Nigeria regarding the incident of the Indonesian Immigration officer with a Nigerian diplomat who shouted ‘I can’t breathe‘. The meeting took place at the Nigerian Foreign Ministry office.

“The Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria has given an explanation to the Nigerian Foreign Minister regarding the incident,” said the Spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Teuku Faizasyah, to reporters, Tuesday (10/8/2021) night.

Faizasyah did not explain further the contents of the meeting. However, the meeting took place at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“(Meeting) at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is not uncommon for the Foreign Minister to visit the Indonesian Embassy,” he explained.

Video Viral

In the viral video, a man is seen being held by a number of people who communicate in Indonesian. The man’s hands and head were held by three people.

The man screamed as if in pain. He also appeared to be trying to replicate the George Floyd tragedy in the US by shouting: ‘I can’t breathe!’ or I can’t breathe when the head is held. Even though he said he couldn’t breathe, he could scream loudly. The three men holding the man looked overwhelmed.

It was later discovered that the man being held was a Nigerian diplomat. But apparently, according to the Indonesian Immigration, the man was uncooperative when questioned.
