Chad’s president, Idriss Déby, has died after being wounded on the front line in fights with a rebel group. This is reported by the army of the Central African country. The army is in battle with rebels from the north.
The 68-year-old Déby was just yesterday again proclaimed president. The elections had been boycotted by the main opposition leaders.
The army said yesterday that it prevented an attack by insurgents on the capital Ndjamena. Déby was supposed to make a speech, but he first went to the front line to encourage the military to fight “terrorists threatening our territory”.
The rebels are located along the border with neighboring Libya. They attacked a border post on election day and have been advancing south in recent weeks.
