Spending the savings on holidays, a priority for the British

Last month the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, finally launched the date on which his citizens could resume travel: a starting May 17. In the meantime, the UK consumer is already well aware of where they will invest all the money saved during this harsh confinement: your priority will be a well-deserved vacation, as highlighted by a survey. The release of savings accumulated by households over the last 12 months is expected to generate an increase of more than 50 billion pounds sterling (58.400 euros) in consumer spending this year.

Almost half, 46% of the British, have seen their cash savings increase over the past year due to lockdowns caused by the coronavirus crisis and, together, it is estimated that they have an additional 192,000 million pounds sterling (224,622 million euros), according to the study of the financial mutual Scottish Friendly and the Center for Economic and Business Research collected by TravelWeekly.

According to this research, households plan to spend more than a quarter, 26%, about 50 billion in total of what was saved with the crisis in the course of 2021.

More than a third of those surveyed, 34%, who plan to spend their money this year are clear that they will use it for travel and accommodation during holidays abroad

For their part, 29% of those who have additional 2020 savings plan to spend more on national holidays in 2021, on calls staycations. (See Cruise staycations could take center stage in the UK).

Slightly less than 28% will choose to increase their spending in restaurants and cafes, while once the restrictions are lifted, 19% prefer to spend that money on pubs and bars.

“The extra money that many Britons have been lucky enough to save over the past 12 months has been sitting idle in bank accounts as people wait for restrictions to be lifted. A large proportion of Britons intend to enjoy the opportunity to finally spend it in the coming months on holidays, meals out and in the shops, “explained Kevin Brown, savings specialist at Scottish Friendly.
