The first space hotel changed its name (and is expected to open in 2027)

The Gateway Spaceport

Closed at home dreaming of the next trip? Forget paradisiacal beaches or big cities. The holidays of the future may be in Space.

It all started in 2019, when the Californian company Gateway Foundation began to unveil its plans for the construction of a hotel in Space in the style of cruise ships, so called Von Braun Station.

Now, tell the television network CNN, this futuristic concept got a new name – “Voyager Station” – and will be built by Orbital Assembly Corporation, a new construction company by former pilot John Blincow, who also leads the Gateway Foundation.

In an interview with the North American channel, Blincow explained that the covid-19 pandemic caused some delays, but that the construction is expected to start in 2026. If everything goes as planned, the hotel will be fully operational in 2027.

“We are trying to make the public realize that this golden age of space travel is just around the corner. Is coming. And fast, ”said the official.

The team wants this hotel to take a little bit of Earth to Space, through comfortable and cozy rooms and classy bars and restaurants. But that does not mean that we are going to ignore the novelty of being there. There are plans, for example, to serve “Space food” traditional (such as freeze-dried ice cream).

In addition, there will be activities to take advantage of the possibility of “doing things that you can’t do on Earth”, explains Tim Alatorre, senior architect at Orbital Assembly Corporation.

“Because of the lightness and reduced gravity, guests will be able to jump much higher, to lift things that they usually cannot, to run in another way,” he recalled.

According to the designer, the “Voyager Station” will have the shape of a huge wheel, which will rotate constantly, creating a simulated gravitation which will make your stay much more comfortable than at the International Space Station (ISS).

The presence of gravity means that many of the problems that affect ERA astronauts will not appear at this hotel. Guests will be able to go to the bathroom normally, the showers will use recycled water and food will be served in common restaurants.

For now, those responsible for the project do not want to say what the average price of the stay will be. However, they hope that this can be compared to the cost of a “trip in a cruise or Disneyland“.
