Still no buyer: Mexico remains seated on the presidential Dreamliner

For more than two years the government of Mexico has been trying to get rid of its presidential jet. But the Boeing 787 has a problem.

It is named after José María Morelos y Pavón, a priest and fighter for the independence of Mexico. And it should radiate size and economic potency. In October 2014, President Enrique Peña Nieto proudly took over a Boeing 787-8 as the new Mexican government jet.

After that, the Dreamliner with the registration XC-MEX in Dallas was given a luxurious VIP facility for two years. It was only ready for use in 2016. But even after that he didn’t fly much. The Boeing 787 has just completed 214 flights over 600,000 kilometers, the acquisition and conversion costs of which are estimated at around 180 million euros.

Sales attempts and the lottery failed

That’s up to Andrés Manuel López Obrador. After taking over the presidency from his predecessor in December 2018, he declared the plane too pompous and put it down. Since then, his government has tried to sell the Dreamliner. The head of state went innovative ways and even organized a lottery. In the end, however, there was not the Dreamliner to be won, only the equivalent.

López Obrador has not had any success so far. “I took the opportunity to offer it,” he said of the presidential Dreamliner last week, “but we have not been successful so far.” The last announcement by the president also vanished into thin air. A few months ago he had spoken of an attractive $ 120 million offer that had been received. But it did not come to a conclusion this time either.

Remodeling unattractive for potential buyers

One reason for this is the luxurious furnishings. It is not attractive for airlines to buy a used Boeing 787, which first has to be converted again for expensive money. The latest idea – it has also been in the room – is to sell the Dreamliner to a group of Mexican entrepreneurs. They should operate it as a joint business jet – a kind of tarpaulin sharing.
