As the emergency services reported, the property was a “problem house” on Laaer-Berg-Strasse, which is regularly checked for various complaints. These range from violations of the reporting law, fire police complaints to illegal garbage including a plague of rats.
In the morning hours, however, this turned out to be a stroke of luck, because it prevented a misfortune. As part of the inspection, Wiener Netze dismantled no fewer than four gas meters and one electricity meter for illegal use. A dangerous gas concentration was also found in the building. Apparently a consumer device had been dismantled and the line behind a kitchen cabinet had not been properly grafted.
A person suspected of being poisoned in the hospital
As a result, all electrical systems and the gas supply were blocked by the professional fire brigade together with the Viennese networks. At the same time the house was evacuated. The 35 tenants were handed over to the professional rescue service that had arrived with the disaster train. Twelve received medical care and one person was brought to hospital with suspected CO poisoning.
The building was ventilated by high-performance fans and control measurements were carried out everywhere. Some apartments had to be opened forcibly. The tenants were then able to return to their apartments. However, the gas pipeline has been closed and the owner has been instructed to have an installer check the installations before the supply can be restored.
