Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, ended the tough lockdown course on Monday with immediate effect and drifted in shallower directions. Curfews have been lifted, hairdressers and restaurants are allowed to reopen, the latter only if the guests can sit on the terrace and eat there. Food stays indoors Farther forbidden.

Since December 3rd, the sunny state on the west coast of the USA has also had a “ban on gatherings” and all citizens have been called on to refrain from unnecessary activities. However, the lifting of the lockdown does not apply to everyone: Bars should remain closed and live sporting events should also not take place.

Twice as many suicide victims as in 2019

In Las Vegas, however, authorities are pushing to reopen schools that have been closed since March 2020 as the number of suicides among students increases. More and more children and young people can no longer withstand the pressure of the lockdowns and the associated effects and are giving up. Some have family conflicts, others suffer from loneliness. 19 young people have died by suicide since March 2020, twice as many as in 2019. The Las Vegas authorities therefore systematically search pupils’ tablets for keywords that suggest suicidal intent. There were 3,100 alarm messages in this context between June and October 2020 alone.

Lockdowns are fatal to mental health

Social activities form an important basis for mental stability. If social contact is prohibited, everyday structures that can lead to psychological instability are also lost. For months warned psychiatrists and psychologists before the emotional consequences of the corona policy and that the number of suicides could climb upwards. Unfortunately, their fears now seem to be confirmed.

Was still in September known It has become that an average of 3 young people with suicidal thoughts report to Austria’s most important helpline for children and adolescents every day, the corona policy has increased these numbers.

Also dangerous in Austria

According to EU-Study In 2015, 18,000 young people in Austria had suicidal thoughts. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among those under the age of 25. Every year in Austria almost three times as many people commit suicide (approx. 1,200) than people die in road accidents. The effects of the corona policy and the associated lockdowns and bans in terms of suicide rates cannot yet be properly assessed. According to Statistics Austria, the number of suicides for the past lockdown year should be announced by the middle of the year at the earliest. (AA)
