The world has celebrated the turn of the year overshadowed by the corona pandemic: people in cities like Sydney, New York and Berlin started the New Year on Friday night with large fireworks, but mostly without visitors – in the hope of an end Pandemic. As every year, countless rockets lit up the sky over the harbor of the Australian metropolis Sydney at midnight. In contrast to other years, only very few visitors were allowed in the city due to the corona pandemic.

New York’s Times Square did not gather a huge crowd this year either. The only spectators were specially invited helpers in the Corona crisis, who were able to enjoy the spectacle from a sufficient distance. After appearances by pop stars like Jennifer Lopez and Gloria Gaynor, the famous crystal ball, the Times Square Ball, was lowered at midnight.

In Brazil, where around 195,000 corona deaths have been counted since the beginning of the pandemic, the authorities prevented celebrants from gathering on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. Usually one of the biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world takes place there. However, the pandemic didn’t stop residents from lighting the city with amateur fireworks.

The cracking of the fireworks mixed with the loud protests of numerous demonstrators. People leaned out of their windows, hit pots and pans and protested against President Jair Bolsonaro, whom they accuse of dealing irresponsibly with the Corona crisis. “Out with you, Bolsonaro!” Shouted numerous demonstrators.

In contrast to the West, which was hard hit by the pandemic, people celebrated in New Zealand, where, thanks to strict entry bans, no new corona case has been registered for weeks. Huge crowds gathered in Auckland and other cities to marvel at the midnight fireworks display.

In Wuhan, China, thousands of people crowded into the center of the city and cheered balloons to greet the year 2021. “2020 was a very difficult year for us,” said resident Xu Du of the AFP news agency. Most people wore masks during the Thursday night celebrations, which included a light show.

Wuhan, a metropolis with a population of eleven million, was sealed off from the outside world for more than two months from the end of January after the novel corona virus was first detected there. Since the summer, however, everyday life has slowly returned.
