Amazon announces 650 MW of renewable power purchase agreements with Engie

Amazon.com Inc will purchase power from 650 MW of wind and solar capacity under several agreements with French company Engie SA, the latter said Thursday.

Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) relate to projects that the French energy giant is developing in the United States, France and Italy. The majority of the purchase is for 569 MW of wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) farms that will be commissioned in Delaware, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia. Once the plants are operational in 2021 and 2022, they will provide Amazon with around 1,850 GWh of electricity per year and will also provide it with renewable energy credits (RECs) related to the project.

In Italy, Amazon will receive electricity with a capacity of up to 66 MW from two of Engie’s solar photovoltaic farms in the south of the country. It will also supply its European activities with 15 MW from an unnamed solar park in France. In both countries, the power purchase agreements mark Amazon’s first investment in utility-scale renewable energy projects.

Electricity off-take agreements support Amazon’s goal of using 100% renewable energy by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040. By announcing a series of power purchase agreements totaling 3.4 GW of solar and wind power globally , the e-commerce giant said it was on track to meet the 2030 target five years ahead of schedule.
