87.6 percent of the Cuban population already has the complete vaccination scheme

At the close of Thursday, January 20, in Cuba there were 33,422,531 doses administered with the national vaccines Sovereign 02, Sovereign Plus and Abdala, according to the update that the Ministry of Health (Minsap) has released this Saturday. More than 4.5 million have received the booster dose.

Until 20th of January, 10,544,254 people had received at least one dose of one of these vaccines. Of these, 9,334,329 already have the second dose, and 8,998,689, the third.

The Minsap specifies that those vaccinated with Soberana Plus as a single dose are included in the first dose statistics.

Nowadays, 9,793,740 people have received the full vaccination schedule, 87.6% of the Cuban population.

The booster dose has already been administered to 4,545,231 people, 368,786 of them as part of the clinical study and 4,176,445 as part of the booster vaccination that is being applied to the population of selected territories and risk groups.

On July 9, 2021, the Center for the State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed) granted the emergency use authorization (EUA) to the Cuban vaccine Abdala 50 µg, from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).

Clinical study

After the approval of the booster dose strategy, the clinical study with vaccine candidates (Soberana 01 and Mambisa) and the start of vaccination with a fourth dose were approved, starting with health workers and risk groups.

These booster doses are added to the number of doses applied in the country in its accumulated. With start date in November 2021, health workers, the population of selected territories and other risk groups participated, and 368,786 doses were administered.

From the beginning of May 2021, the MINSAP, supported by Article 64 of Law 41, Public Health Law, of July 13, 1983, approved a health intervention with the vaccine candidates Abdala and Soberana 02 in risk groups and territories.

The process began that month and included health workers, BioCubaFarma, Medical Sciences students and other risk groups, as well as the population of risk territories selected by stages. 9,618,800 doses were administered.

Intervention study

As part of the investigations associated with the Cuban vaccine candidates Soberana 02 and Abdala, in March 2021 An intervention study was started in risk groups, aimed at subjects in risk groups and who could provide relevant data.

Health workers, BioCubaFarma and other risk groups in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Guantánamo participated in the study, with 454,064 doses administered.

clinical trials

The development of clinical trials with the Cuban vaccine candidates Soberana 02, Abdala and Soberana Plus (for convalescents) was approved by Cecmed and implemented in volunteer subjects from selected territories.

Started in March 2021 with volunteer subjects selected by researchers in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Guantánamo. 266,466 doses were administered (placebo doses administered during clinical trials are not included in the figure).
