  • A team dismantling an old monument in Christchurch, New Zealand, made an unusual find – a message in a bottle, UPI reported, citing city authorities.

The city administration specifies that the workers participating in the activities for the relocation of a war memorial came across the glass bottle while breaking the concrete.

“It was an accidental discovery. The team was working to dismantle the concrete core when a large piece broke off, revealing the glass bottle. If the concrete hadn’t broken in that exact spot, we would never have found it,” said Brent Smith from Christchurch City Council.

The relatively preserved note in the bottle is dated February 1937 and contains a list of the names of the stonemasons who originally built the monument.

“The note is of poor quality, but it’s an incredible link to the past that could easily have gone undiscovered,” adds Smith.

Workers from the team dismantling the memorial to transport it to its new home in the city’s Cathedral Square said the discovery was significant for them.

“It’s a reminder of the rich history and tradition we have to preserve. It’s humbling to work on such an important memorial,” shared Regan Shanks.

Brent Smith specified that officials plan to include a photo of the original note in a time capsule to be placed at the new location of the memorial, BTA adds.
