73 feminicides registered in Mexico during January

In January 2020, a total of 73 femicides were registered, according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System published this Thursday.

This meant a slight decline compared to the same month of 2019, when 75 femicides were committed.

Despite this decrease, femicides remain above the figures of previous years: in January 2018, there were 69 femicides; in January 2017, 51; in January 2016, 44; and in January 2015, 33.

Nationally, in 2019 a total of 10 thousand femicides were registered, compared to 913 in 2018.

As for malicious homicides, in January 2020 2 thousand 819 were committed in Mexico, compared with 2 thousand 854 of the first month of 2019.

In January 2020, the crimes considered high impact, such as manslaughter, kidnapping, extortion and vehicle theft, among others recorded a decrease in relation to January 2019.

Figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) released last night, reveal that the decline was both in the number of investigation folders and in the number of victims.

In the case of intentional homicide, there was a decrease of 4.2 percent in the number of investigation files and 1.2 percent in victims.

In 2019, 2 464 investigation folders were initiated that are related to 2 854 victims; while in 2020, 2,359 investigation folders were initiated with 2,819 victims.

In the case of the kidnapping, the drop was 46 percent in investigation files and 42 percent in victims of this crime, considered, after the murder, as the one with the greatest social impact.

According to SESNSP figures in 2019, 161 research folders were initiated while in January 2020 there were 87; Meanwhile, in the case of victims, the figure went from 186 cases in 2019 to 108 in 2020.

Extortion was reduced 1.4 percent in research files, going from 704 during 2019 to 694 in 2020; while in the number of victims the loss was 0.7 percent, since it went from 720 to 715.

In the theft of a four-wheeled motor vehicle with violence, the decrease was 14.6 percent in the number of investigation folders. And it went from 5 thousand 371 during January 2019 to 4 thousand 587 during January 2020. For this crime there is no victim accounting.

The crime of femicide remained. In January 2020, 72 investigation folders were initiated in Mexico against 71 that began in January 2019.

In the case of victims, the figure went from 75 in January 2019 to 73 in January 2020, that is, 2.6 percent less.

However, other crimes where the woman is mostly the victim did increase. For example, sexual abuse grew 13 percent, from 1,572 investigative folders to 1,779.

Sexual harassment grew 59 percent as it went from 228 cases in January 2019 to 363 during January 2020. Sexual harassment grew 91 percent, from 67 investigation folders to 128.

Simple rape grew 6.7 percent, rape equated 10 percent, domestic violence 18 percent, gender violence other than intra-family 38 percent and corruption of minors 33 percent.
