7,000 medics have been fired in Greece for refusing to be vaccinated

An amendment will be introduced to allow healthcare workers who have received the first dose to return

Nearly 6,500 health workers and 500 emergency workers have been fired for failing to meet the Covid-19 vaccination deadline, new Greek Health Minister Thanos Plevris was quoted as saying by the online edition of the Kathimerini newspaper.

The minister told lawmakers that of the 6,412 health workers removed for non-vaccination, 5,594 work in hospitals and 818 in primary care. Of the 500 dismissed emergency workers, 400 are support staff.

He commented that the fact that 400 health workers received the vaccine on Monday, a few days before the deadline, shows that the government’s decision to make vaccinations mandatory for hospital workers has an effect.

One hospital has received from 35% vaccination among staff to 87%, Pleuris pointed out.

He added that an amendment would be introduced next week to allow health workers who received the first dose of the vaccine to return to work.
