Seventy percent of the coastlines affected by the Mindoro oil spill have been cleared, according to Oriental Mindoro Governor Bonz Dolor. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had previously set a deadline of four months to complete the clean-up, but after conducting an aerial inspection, he acknowledged that shifting weather patterns made it impossible to set a deadline. Marcos Jr.’s priority now is the creation of alternative livelihood sources for affected residents, since the oil spill has damaged P445.33m ($8.5m) worth of fishing gear and produce and caused a P441.25m ($8.4m) profit loss for around 26,000 fisherfolk, according to BFAR data.
