President Russia Vladimir Putin supported by Wagner Group’s mercenary forces helping the Ukrainians.

Wagner’s name was in the spotlight because of their series of brutality in the battle on the territory of Ukraine.

Long before Wagner, there was a legendary mercenary known for their fighting prowess and unforgiveness.

Here are six legendary and dangerous troops that have ever existed in the world, as quoted from The History.

1. The Ten Thousand

In the Anabasis account by historian Xeneophon, the Ten Thousand were Greek warriors contracted by Cyrus the Younger to overthrow his brother, King Artaxerxes II, from the throne of Persia.

The Greek mercenaries were recruited from hardy veterans of the Peloponnesian war in 401 BC. The Ten Thousands troops fought alongside Cyrus against the rebel forces in a clash with the king’s troops near Baghdad.

2. The White Company

The White Company mercenaries are best known as the ‘Free Company’. They were the non-profit army that carried out the bulk of the warfare in 14th century Italy.

The unit first rose to prominence in the 1360s before being crushed under the command of Sir John Hawkhood, an Englishman who had been knighted for service in the Hundred Years’ war.

3. The Swiss Guard

The Swiss Guard is known as the Pope’s patron at the Vatican in red stripes. At first they were mercenaries known during the Renaissance.

Over a million Swiss adventurers fought in Europe between the 15th and 19th centuries. These troops were among the European armies to master the use of the spear against more heavily armored foes.
