617 new cases reported in 24 hours, the increase in cases seems to be slowing down a bit

This Sunday, August 9, 617 cases of coronavirus were newly reported compared to the results of the day before. A value similar to the figures for the previous weekend, when there were 745 and 651 cases, Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2. These figures are to be broken down over the various dates of diagnosis.

Hospitals were treating 281 patients with Covid-19 (-5) on Saturday. Thirty patients were admitted to hospital on Saturday and 38 were allowed to leave the hospital. Intensive care accommodated 69 patients, a stable figure, of which 36 required respiratory assistance (-1).

Slight slowdown in the growth of cases

The figures of the averages per day, calculated on the basis of a period of 7 days, begin to show a slight slowdown in the increase of new cases: the growth curve becomes less steep, three weeks after the start of the resurgence of the virus in our country, in mid-July. But it is still too early to see a decline: the number of daily cases continues to increase in the three regions of the country.

From July 30 to August 5, Belgium detected an average of 564.4 cases of coronavirus infection per day, according to the latest figures released by Sciensano on Sunday morning. A number up 19% from the previous seven days: the weekly average stood at 567.9 cases per day on Saturday. These increases are much smaller than a week ago, when these increases were 60-70%, or even more than 100% on certain days (ie a doubling).

The cumulative incidence over 14 days reached 63.3 cases per 100,000 population, an increase of almost 150% compared to the previous 14-day period. Given the magnitude of the calculation period for this incidence, this increase is logical and only reflects the start of the resurgence of the virus, two weeks ago.

Still no rebound in hospitalizations

From July 30 to August 5, hospitals admitted an average of 23.3 patients per day, an indicator down 7% from the previous seven days. Belgium deplores the death of 9,870 patients. Between July 30 and August 5, 3.4 deaths per day on average were recorded (+ 33%).

Belgium has recorded a total of 73,401 positive Covid-19 tests since the start of the pandemic in March, 18,444 people have been hospitalized, and 9,870 have died.
