600 computers and 1,000 Internet connections, the first collection in Asturias to eliminate the digital divide | BE Gijón | Today for Today Gijón

The regional government is going to start this week the distribution of more than 1,000 internet connections and 600 new teams, between computers, tablets and mobile phones, to reduce the digital divide, which makes it difficult for a small percentage of students to access the non-classroom training that non-university education centers have organized as a result of the suspension of teaching in the classrooms.

The general director of Professional Education, Javier Cueli, explained that the teams and connections will be directed, in first place, “to the students of baccalaureate, Vocational training (FP) and end of cycle courses (4th of ESO and 6th of Primary) that lacks the means to continue telematically with the school year. “The materials will arrive at the municipalities, accompanied by the necessary documentation to receive, guard and distribute the devices to the families. All shipments are accredited and registered to return the loan once need ceases.

These new resources join the more than 7,500 computing devices (between computers and tablets) suitable for use that educational centers have and that they already distribute among their students to make up for deficiencies.

The Edp Foundation he has donated to the Principality more than 460 new devices, valued at 200,000 euros, to which are added 70 tablets from Telefónica-Fundación Profuturo, and 40 mobiles provided by Xiaomi. For its part, the Government of Asturias, through the General Directorate for Digital Strategy, has enabled more than 1,000 new internet connections. Other administrations such as the Ministry of Education and Professional Training and the Asturian Federation of Councils (FACC) also collaborate in this initiative, in addition to communications companies such as Orange and Vodafone. Spanish Red Cross has offered its support and collaboration to solve the difficulties that may arise in the distribution of these resources. Your volunteer staff will deliver the material to your home every two weeks while the health crisis lasts.

Furthermore, the professional colleges of computer engineers of the Principality (CITIPA and COIIPA) have launched a program to help families and teaching staff who need support in the use of telematic tools and applications. The objective is to overcome the possible obstacles that prevent them from carrying out the tasks intended to cover the lack of face-to-face training.

The teachers and families can send their petitions for help through a simple web form (https://www.impulsotic.org/apoyo-Covid-19) and, once received, they will be channeled by the schools to a group of volunteers.
